It’s been a while since I’ve made a regular contribution to the blog. The reasons are varied for my absence. Suffice it to say I’ve been otherwise engaged.

Last night the Congress, excuse me the Democrats, an Independent and three Republican Senators, came to the rescue of the American economy by passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. All the republicans in the House and the vast majority of those in the Senate couldn’t be bothered with the economic devastation playing out in households across the country. They want the President, and by extension the American people to fail. Their leader, the former drug addict and talk radio blowhard russssh has decreed Obama must fail. The current crop of republicans, incapable of caring what happens to their states and cities, will follow the clarion call of failure. Ah, but the lessor republicans such as Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina will milk this for every bit of theatre possible. Sanford says he isn’t sure he’ll not accept the money despite the assistance it would provide for food banks and job training. My prediction, Sanford could allow the state legislature override his authority and accept the funding. Sanford could blame them or the national Democrats when there is no magic turnaround within a year, regardless there won’t be a magic turnaround anywhere within a year. But, what if there is a measureable improvement in the country’s economy within a year? He’ll poo poo it as meaningless and a product of the normal business cycle. There’s leadership only a republican could love. My best to the people of South Carolina.
